The In-School Mentoring Program matches caring men and women with boys and girls in elementary schools in Chatham-Kent. The children meet their mentor once a week for an hour during the school year. Mentors are often allowed time out of work by their employers. School staff identify the children who would most benefit from the In-School Mentoring Program. Boys and girls who need a trusted friend and positive role model are chosen. They experience increased self-esteem and self-confidence and a more positive outlook as program participants. The focus is on fun and sharing NOT homework and academics. The matches may participate in a sports activity, read a book, play computer games, or just talk. All mentors complete the same screening, selection, and training process as traditional Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Ongoing supervision and support is provided by agency Caseworkers.
